What is the significance of peanuts in saving the television show Jericho?

I'm a huge Veronica Mars fan. I'm buying Mars Bars and sending emails to the CW. I've read a lot about the Jericho fans saving the show by sending peanuts. I've never watched the show so I wanted to why they sent peanuts. Thanks. Hope you can help!
